A Study of New York Dance Parade Festival in Relations to Multiculturalism

This study was aimed to explore how New York City promoted dancing as a form of street artistic expression through the Dance Parade Festival and offered the public the educational opportunity to experience the diversity of dance and dance to celebrate. Interdisciplinary research methods, including historical research, in depth interviews, cross-cultural dance aesthetics and related literature, are utilized in this study. By the comprehensive examination on the social-cultural background, organizational mission, leading figures, and performance forms and styles of the Dance Parade, it is not surprised to find out why they have tremendous growth and achieved such many impressive results so far in the short four years. It is concluded that various dance forms and styles, mainstream or non-mainstream are presented in the parade, therefore, it can attract people no matter understand the dancing or not to join the parade for the fun. Theatre dance performances are limited to a fixed group of audience, while the parade-style performances can be more aggressive and effective in promotion of dance education to the public. The idea of dancing festival spurred the New York City to begin sponsoring any kind of dancing activities every year and held a citywide dancing parade festival. The results revealed that the traditional thinking to label dance as professional dance and recreational dance are needed to make rectification along with the new trend and new era.
