Poor sleep quality is a common health problem for community-dwelling seniors. Poor sleep quality often causes daytime sleepiness, lowers normal function and daily activities, and promotes vulnerability to depression, anxiety, and long-term abuse of medication. Furthermore, poor sleep quality has negative impacts on quality of life for seniors and medical costs. This article reviews the literature regarding quality of sleep and its related concepts and affecting factors. In addition, the author offers evidence-based strategies for promoting quality of sleep to healthcare providers and describes how to practically apply these strategies, making them feasible caring measures for community-dwelling seniors.
