Wang Wei 王維 (701-761) was a leading poet in the High Tang. The poems of Wang Wei have been appreciated since Tang Dynasty. In his later years, Wang Wei became more involved in Buddhism and his poems reflected his focus on Zen practice. Therefore, Wang Wei was referred to as the ”Poet Buddha.” Shen Deqian 沈德潛 (1673-1769), a distinguished poetry scholar in Qing Dynasty, compiled ”Tangshi biecai ji 唐詩別裁集”. ”Tangshi biecai ji 唐詩別裁集”, one of the most important anthology of Tang poems, showed the theory of gediao (格調). The essay aims to analyze Wang Wei's poems in ”Tangshi biecai ji 唐詩別裁集”, and to discuss the style and writing techniques in these poems. Also, with Shen Deqian's comments in the book as references, the essay aims to generalize some conclusions about Shen's appraisal of Wang Wei's works.
