High-tech medical technology not only extends the life span of people, but also raises many issues related to chronic disease care, such as geriatrics care or palliative care. However, currently, the subjects for whom can have palliative or hospice-palliative care in Taiwan are cancer patients, and the locations in which can offer this kind of care are the hospice wards in the hospitals or in intensive units or in communities. The elderly in long-term care facilities do not have any kind of palliative care services so far. To date, the use of a variety of terms such as palliative care, hospice care and end-of-life care is still inconsistent among literature. Therefore, first, the common health problems and symptoms among the elderly in long-term care facilities would be summarized. Secondarily, the definition of palliative care, hospice care and end-of-life care would be explained. Finally, the internal and external factors that affect the provision of palliative care in long-term care facilities would be presented in this paper.
