Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is an uncommon condition wherein the urine bags of some patients turn purple over a period of hours or days after insertion of an indwelling urinary catheter. The purple discoloration develops when the metabolic products from dietary tryptophan, pigments indirubin or indigo blue, interact with the plastic material of the catheter or the urine bag. Here, we report a case of a 21-year-old male patient with spinal cord injury who was bedridden for more than a year with chronic constipation, developed mixed urinary tract infection of Enterococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella species, and who presented with a purple urine bag syndrome.
