Conflicts between Career Women and Their Mothers-in-Law: An Example of Married Nursing Staff

The purpose of this study was to explore the coping mechanisms of working women in Chinese families undergoing modem-day transitions by analyzing the conflicts between married nurses and their mothers-in-law. Theoretical sampling was used for the selection of participants. In-depth interviewing was used for the collection of data. Eight married nurses who had encountered conflicts with their mothers-in-law were interviewed. The data was analyzed by consistent content analysis. According to this study, Taiwanese families remain traditional and patriarchal. The study also revealed that modem daughters-in-law had better opportunities to obtain resources than their traditional mothers-in-law in achieving a balance between traditional filial piety and modem filial piety. The two major themes that emerged from the data were: a) family structure and b) conflict and adaptation which consisted of turning points and buffers to the conflicts.
