The concept ”self-management” has been wildly applied in the health education for patients with chronic diseases in recent years; however, it still has no explicit statement to clarify the definition and attributes of this concept. Moreover, the terms ”self-management”, ”self-care” and ”adherence” were often used interchangeably in studies. This article applies the methodology outlined by Walker and Avant (1995) to analyze the concept of self-management. The definition of self-management, attributes, example cases, and empirical references will be presented in this paper. It is expected this analysis will clarify the essence of the concept of self-management, which may serve as a basis for developing the instruments and nursing interventions related to self-management.
