In this paper a well-known tool for relative efficiency assessment, namely Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), was used to measure the performance of pitchers during the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) season. To increase the consistency of the results, the researcher utilized three factors to define the Pitching Dominance Frontier (PDF) for pitchers' efficiency estimates. The proposed approach considered three inputs (salary, innings pitched, number of pitches) and three outputs (earned run average, hits/innings pitched, bases on balls/strike outs) to measure the efficiency of 19 qualified pitchers of the CPBL. The results were analyzed and performance indexes as well as benchmarks were computed for each pitcher. In addition, plotting the performance of a specific pitcher for games could help identify trends.
