With the rapidly increasing demand of services with QoS requirements, resource reservation protocol (RSVP) has been proposed as a savior for wired networks. But RSVP is inadequate to accommodate the mobile hosts that need QoS guarantees in spite of their mobility. In this paper, we propose a new mobile resource reservation protocol (MRSVP) for mobile hosts to support the Integrated Services defined by IETF. Our MRSVP is fully compatible with RSVP. Applications with QoS requirements run in mobile hosts like PDA or portable computer will not be aware of the differences between RSVP and MRSVP. To accomplish this, the protocol has to reserve resources in the mobile host’s traveling path. However, it is very difficult to predict the locations that a mobile host will visit. In this paper, we propose a next-cell prediction algorithm to reserve sources in advance. If the mobile host does not traveled as predicted, reserved resources may go unused. In order to use bandwidth efficiently, we add additional information to RSVP soft states to coordinate with admission control and bandwidth management algorithm. Our bandwidth management algorithm allows best-effort flows to use the reserved but unused bandwidth in a cell. Finally, the simulation results show that our method will enable the mobile networks to support QoS connections efficiently.
