The goal of this paper is to familiarize the reader with the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless LANs. For those interested in understanding the standard, the language used to describe the standard is clear and precise. Specifications related to architectural components, MAC protocol, the PHY layers and recent enhancements are described. In addition, authentication and security procedure, power management and the hidden node problem in wireless LANs are also discussed.
