Wireless technologies can help solve traffic congestions in urban environments, where road infrastructures develop slower than the sometimes-exponential growth in the number of cars in traffic. We present a traffic control system developed on top of a vehicular ad-hoc network created between cars in traffic and the road infrastructure. Drivers and sensors participate in a crowd-based approach to sense the traffic. We propose a scalable approach, where the traffic is modelled from this data into distinct zones, and several distributed servers use the obtained models to recognize potential real-time traffic problems or various traffic patterns. These servers send possible traffic updates back to cars, such that to load-balance traffic. We present evaluation results that show the capabilities of the proposed transportation control system to solve traffic-related problems.
