Post Delivery Feeding Methods among Vietnamese Mothers in Taiwan

摘要

This study compares the post delivery feeding methods, breastfeeding attitude, and social support for Vietnamese mothers living in Taiwan. Eighty-one Vietnamese mothers were recruited from the National Database of Hepatitis B Vaccination for Pregnant Women from December 2006 to May 2007 in Taichung County. Subjects were surveyed by a telephone interview method. Breastfeeding data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square, factor analysis and regression model. In the item of feeding methods, the results reveal that 40.7% of Vietnamese mothers adopted bottle feed, 32.1% practiced exclusive breastfeeding and 27.2% used both breastfeeding and formula (so called mixed feeding). In the item of breastfeeding attitude, the average scores for mothers who practiced exclusive breastfeeding were 83.92±5.17, higher than those of mothers using bottle feeding or mixed feeding (p<.001). For social support scale, the average scores for mothers who practiced exclusive breastfeeding were 91.69±36.11, higher than those of mothers using bottle feeding or mixed feeding (p<.001). Logistic regression revealed significant associations between higher attitude scores toward breastfeeding (OR=1.1, 95%CI=1.032-1.116) and a higher social support scores (OR=1.02, 95%CI=1.012-1.038) and whether or not decide to use breastfeeding. The results of this study can be of reference for understanding the change of breastfeeding behaviors of mothers in different cultures, and could be useful for policies that encourage breastfeeding.
