Chen Ying-zhen's novel Iscariot Judas' Story (1961), rewrote the Bible story of Judas betraying Jesus, turning Judas into a revolutionary. This article discusses the subjectivity of Judas in the novel, with reflection on Chen Ying-zhen's early leftist thinking. Judah clung to initiate actions, but his actions lacked a solid foundation and heroic poetry, and ultimately became a dirty betrayal. Judas represented Taiwan's left-wing youth's mental predicament in the 1960s. He tried to find a complete subjectivity from universal love, but failed inevitably because of his rational cynicism. Judas followed Jesus, only taking Jesus as an alternative of his revolutionary plan. So he could not be the subject of faith. In reference to multiple perspective, the novel reveals the inanition of Judas, questioning how the left-wing ideal grew into solid faith in the 1960s. Chen Ying-zhen touched by the left-wing books the pulsation of red China, but also recognized Taiwan society deeply linked to the painful broken history. It's hard to set up the leftist faith, not only because of taboos in reality, but also because of impossibility to get a real sense for China, which has become a key issue in Chen Ying-zhen's thinking and practice.
