De Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie was a super trading company in Taiwan, and used Taiwan as an entr epôt in East Asia. The company depended on Chinese merchants very much, buying all the Chinese merchandise from China with the help of Chinese ships. So, when the Chinese merchants began to compete with the Dutch on the market, the Dutch gradually lost its superiority as the leading traders in East Asia. In order to survive, the company had but to find a new trade route connecting East Asia with South Asia rather than following the traditional route. In this way, the company was able to transport goods from South Asia to East Asia, and maintain its Intra-Asian trade.
