Chronic kidney disease is a major public health problem. Kidney disease develops and progresses more rapidly to end stage in people with diabetes or high blood pressure. Therefore, people with these chronic health problems require counseling about the possibility of kidney disease and the steps they must take to avoid serious kidney complications. Strategies for preventing the development of chronic kidney disease, therefore, should use appropriate methods to target these populations, develop a plan for management and evaluation of each stage of chronic kidney disease, and educate individuals at increased risk for developing chronic kidney disease.
