Body mass index was used to examine the prevalence of underweight and obesity of people with intellectual disabilities caring in a large institution in Taipei. The present study collected the physical chart of weight and height in 4 successive years from 1999-2002 of 168 people with intellectual disabilities. Data collected in the survey indicated that the average BMI distribution in adults with intellectual disabilities was 20-21, children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities was 16.8-17.8. The prevalence of overweight or obese in adults with intellectual disabilities was 20.5-26.3%, children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities was 4.8-12.6%. The study found that the high prevalence of underweight among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities was a press problem needed to be emphasized. We conclude that the appropriateness of BMI distribution of the general population to the people with intellectual disabilities should be re-examined and further studies.
