Do the Usage of Di (2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate-Containing Medical Devices Promote Development of Allergic Symptoms?

Background and Purpose: Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a FDA approved plasticizer used in medical devices and may be toxic to humans. Although, FDA has pointed out that ”DEHP containing devices have been used on newborn babies for many years without apparent ill effect”. Through medical care procedures, DEHP is detectable in neonates' urine samples. In this study we examined whether or not the DEHP containing devices have any ill effect on newborn babies. We tested the hypotheses that the risks of allergic symptoms of infants who had been cared in NICU are higher than those in newborn center. Methods: We studied a convenience sample of 202 infants enrolled from NICU (n=29) and NBC (n=173) at a teaching hospital. We collected all information about infants' health related data, medical devices used during hospitalization, family history, household conditions, and the occurrence of four patterns of allergic symptoms, named atopic dermatitis, lower airway allergy (asthma), allergic rhinitis, and Gastro-intestinal (G-I) tract allergy. We used chi-square tests, power analyses, and multiple logistic regression models to analyze the data. Results: Three out of four incidence rates of the allergic symptoms in NICU were higher, although not statistically significantly, than those incidence rates in NBC (except G-I Tract Allergy). There were some evidences showed that the longer the neonates stayed in the hospital the greater the risks of getting some allergic symptoms would be. Conclusions: We found some evidence about the ill effects of DEHP-containing medical devices to newborn babies. Further investigation is needed to get amore conclusive result. A study with sample size of at least 1800 newborn babies and more than 3 years follow-up is recommended.
