The primary purpose of this study was to examine students from normal families and families with long-term stress (family member or members abusing alcohol, having domestic violence, gambling, abusing drug, and/or long-term illness) concerning their differences in codependency, and other factors, such as physical illness, psychological symptoms, self-concept, shame feeling, and family relationships. A total of 1,047 samples from high school and college were collected. The research concluded that students from families with long-term stress had stronger codependency. And they showed more physical and psychological symptoms, shame feeling and lower self-concept than those from normal families. Moreover, they showed poor relationships with their parents. The research also indicated that students from families with two or more problem members tended to have stronger codependency, more physical illness, and shame feeling than those from families with only one problem member; besides, students from families with two or more problem members showed poorer relationship with their parents. Finally, physical illness, psychological symptoms, self-concept and shame feeling were the best predictors for codependency.
