Zhang Zhong Jing's formula, Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang, is the exemplar formula for treating epigastric glomus. Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang is used for treating a condition of stomach heat and intestinal cold. Within the formula exists Da Huang Huang Lian Xie Xin Tang's framework for clearing stomach heat, and Li Zhong Tang's framework for warming intestinal cold. However, of the four herbs comprising Li Zhong Tang, Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang contains all of them except Bai Zhu. Why is it that Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang, which treats vacuity glomus doesn't contain Bai Zhu? This article attempts to discuss this question as well as give examples and viewpoints of various doctors throughout Chinese medical history and their application of Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang, in hopes of providing more ways of thinking about clinical treatment.
