Health care consumers often choose different kinds of treatment modalities in addition to orthodox medicine. Aromatherapy is one of the most popular complementary therapies in Europe. Although aromatherapy has not been broadly used in Taiwan, many research studies showed that there is growing number of health care professionals start to discover and practice aromatherapy in their medical and nursing care especially in palliative care. The major reason is that research showed significant results in pain relief, reduce patients' level of anxiety and depression as well as their sense of well-being and these are focus areas of palliative care. Health care professionals may consider aromatherapy is the complementary way to help patients with their physical, psychological, and spiritual needs to improve their quality of life.
