A Preliminary Study of the Socialization Process in Toddlers at Risk of ADHD

Objective: The purpose of the current study was to explore how Chinese parents deal with children who exhibit ADHD behaviors such as impulsiveness, hyperactivity and inattention. Based on interviews with parents of toddlers, this study developed a model for the socialization process of toddlers with ADHD. Methods: A semi-structured questionnaire, based on the dynamic model of interpersonal conflict/harmony and the concept of ”Ren,” was used to interview 37 mothers of 1.5- to 3-year-olds. The interviews were analyzed to determine the behavior of the children, the emotions and thoughts of the mothers and the mothers' responses to their children's behavior. Results: One hundred and sixty behavior codes, 15 categories and 4 higher hierarchical concepts were identified, and a model for internal inhibition and control in the socialization process was developed. Conclusions: Cognitive behavior therapy has been discussed for toddlers with ADHD, based on the model of the socialization process and modified for use in Chinese society. We have also proposed further study of the socialization processes of internal inhibition and control.
