Under the banner of ”industry nurtured by forestry, agriculture fostered by industry” in the year of 1952, the Taiwanese government sought to enforce economical policies in which former lumbering-based forestry developed further into timber manufacturer, and thereby to trigger renovation of the existing industrial structure. Resolved to establish an industrial area, the Taiwan Provincial Government included the Ta Shu Shan Forestry Corporation into its direct domination and initiated entrepreneurial management, hoping to mark such policy as an innovation indicative to the trend of modernization. Short-lived as it was, the corporation acquired ample support from the government and from the American Dollars in the 15 years, sufficient for boasting the title of ”Centrum of Far-East Forest Industry.” In a historical point of view, such an attempt to maximize the output value of Taiwan's reputed abundance of forest resource reflected much significance. After the 921 earthquake in 1999, the outline of the old lumber mill loomed again, reviving in the form of a historical monument installed to indicate its great historical significance. Fire, however, ruthlessly brought down the Taiwan red cedar, as if reclaiming his possession for the Mountain. Other than treating the incident solely as a natural disaster, we should also examine possible human causes out of indiscretion in this case.
