This study was designed to describe the care giving experience of male caregivers in families with a member suffering from mental illness. Participants in this study included males who served as the primary home caregivers to psychiatric patients to whom they shared a blood relationship. The geographical region of this study was limited to southern Taiwan. Nine qualified male caregivers agreed to participate in this study and received in-depth interviews, which were tape-recorded. After interviews, tapes were transcribed as verbatim manuscripts. The Giorgi's phenomenological method was used for data analysis. The following four themes emerged from this study: (1) taking responsibility for the male caregiver's family, (2) having no choice but to accept the trials of physical labor, (3) seeing no end to care responsibilities and worries, and (4) undergoing a self-adjustment process and learning to face reality. Results can help health workers learn more about male caregiver and promote the well-being of caregivers and care-receivers.
