Purpose: To examine the differences of EEG alpha-power and coherence between best and worst shots in dart throw for novice players. Methods: Twenty right-handed male participants, who aged 20.11±1.04 years old without dart-throw training experience, were recruited for this study. Each participant completed 60 dart throws, along with EEG collection in α1 (8-10Hz), α2 (10-13Hz), β1 (13-20Hz), and β2 (20-30Hz) bands during the last 1-second of the preshot period. The EEG powers and coherences corresponding to the best and worst 25% shots were compared. Results: The average powers of α1, α2, β1, β2 on sixteen electrodes during the preparatory period of best performance were not significantly different from those during the preparatory period of worst performance. Similarly, EEG coherences between the pairs of T3-Fz (left temporal-central frontal) and T4-Fz (right temporal-central frontal) were significantly lower in the condition of best performance than those in the condition of worst performance. Conclusion: According to EEG spectral analyses between good and poor performance, movement variability may have more powerful influence on novices' motor performance than mental factors. Meanwhile, little communication between frontal and left temporal areas seems helpful to the brain for enhancing the effectiveness of resource distribution. The results of persent study indicate that fewer cerebral cortical resources required for processing psychomotor task accompanies better performance for novice motor executers and this phenomenon can be reflected by EEG.
