The purpose of this research was to explore the application of SEM in the papers of seven major academic journals in physical education and recreation from 1999 to 2003 in hopes of having a further understanding of the use of the applied model types, statistic software tools, number of samples, number of sampling groups, variables, model size, and the model fit indexes applied in the SEM papers by means of organizing, deducing and analyzing the related information. In addition, the validity and reliability of the scales concerning the papers were also analyzed in this research. The findings of the analysis were as the followings: Totalizing 31 papers were SEM-related, among which one was conceptual, while 30 were applied papers. In model application strategies, most of the strategies were confirmatory modeling strategy and generation strategy, while less were competing models strategy. In terms of analysis, LISREL statistic software was taken as the main tool. The number of samples ranged mostly from 201 to 300, and the research tests of the papers were all conducted by single sample, among which mostly were large models with more than eight observed variables. In the use of model fit indexes, three types of indexes were mostly used (absolute fit indexes, relative fit indexes, and parsimonious fit indexes). As for the validity application of scales, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was taken as the main method, while Cronbach α (Cronbach a. of Internal Consistency) was taken as the main method for reliability application. Accordingly, the foregoing findings were provided for the scholars in the field of physical education and recreation as reference.
