摘要

這篇論文探討1996年以後梅蒂斯人的族群意識與認同建構，筆者試圖回答幾個問題：爲何在近十年間梅蒂斯人的族群意識高漲近一倍？爲何梅蒂斯人的認同建構是建立在文化、歷史上的獨特性，而非傳統血源、語言觀點？梅蒂斯人的族群認同之路借助了哪些外界力量？在檢視上述問題時，筆者認爲1996年的《皇家原住民委員會報告書》、以及法院的判例等文件，提供了相當程度的合理解釋。

This paper investigates the Métis ethnic consensus and identity construction since 1996. The author intends to answer few questions: Why the percentage of Métis self-identity has nearly doubled in 2006 Canada census compared with the 1996 census? Why the Métis identity construction was built on the bases of cultural and historical uniqueness instead of blood link or language perspective? What are the dynamic factors provided for the Métis identity construction? The 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and some Court cases provide reasonable explanations.
