Avian Survey on Yuen-yang Lake and Chi-lan Sacred Tree Garden

During the period of June, 2002 to May, 2003, a bird survey was conducted in the Chi-lan sacred tree garden, Chi-lan No. 100 forest lane (from 12 to 17 K), and Yuen-yang lake by observations held along the major paths. Seventy-one species of 22 avian families were recorded, among them were 12 endemic species of Taiwan and 55 resident bird species. Resident bird species took up 77% of the species recorded and were the major bird type in this study. Bird species of the subfamilies in Muscicapidae, Turdinae (11 spp.), Timalinae (11 spp.), and Sylviinae (5 spp.), summed up to 37% of the total bird species recorded, were the major taxonomic groups for this survey. The daily maximum bird number recorded of the whole observation year was 900. Species with higher daily amount listed in consequence were Taiwan Yuhina (Yuhina brunneiceps, 211 counts), Steere's Liocichla (Liocichla steerii , 84 counts), Red-headed Tit (Aegithalos concinnus , 76 counts), Taiwan Sibia (Heterophasia auricularis , 56 counts), Green-backed Tit (Parus monticolus , 51 counts), White-throated Flycatcher-Warbler (Abroscopus albogularis , 37 counts), and Blue Shortwing (Brachypteryx montana , 23 counts). The observed bird number of these 7 species took up 60% of the daily maximum bird number recorded of the whole observation year, which rendered them the dominant species in the survey area of this study. Birds of the subfamily Timalinae indicated the highest amount on both the number of species and counts, therefore, was identified as the dominant avian group in this area. The seasonal changes of species numbers were in coincidence with the seasonal changes of the bird counts, which showed a high to low sequence of summer, fall, spring, and winter. Eleven bird species encountered during survey period became the first time record for the Chi-lan forest area. They were Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola ), Red-flanker Bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus), Red-bellied Thrush (Turdus chrysolaus), Dusky Thrush (Turdus naumanni eunomus), Nauman's Thrush (Turdus naumanni naumanni), Eye-browed Thrush (Turdus obscurus), Siberian Thrush (Turdus sibiricus), White-throated Laughing Thrush (Garrulax albogularis), Great Tit (Parus major), Yellow-throated Bunting (Emberiza elegans), and Beavan's Bullfinch (Pyrrhula erythaca).
