Little study is conducted to examine the relationship between workplace friendship and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Moreover, by reasoning, such a relationship remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study is to clarify this relationship by communal and exchange perspectives. A total of 286 valid questionnaires were collected. Empirical data showed that workplace friendship is positively associated with OCB. The positive relationship between workplace friendship and OCB toward other people is stronger than the positive relationship between workplace friendship and OCB toward the organization. However, the positive relationship between communal workplace friendship and OCB is not stronger than the positive relationship between exchange workplace friendship and OCB. Discussion and suggestions for future research are provided.
