While the major world marathons were held in such big cities as London, New York, Boston, and Chicago, attracting tens of thousands of people all over the world, Taipei City has followed the trend of road race. The purpose of this study includes threefold: first, to trace the origins of marathon routes and to analyze the requirements of marathon course under the rules of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF); second, to explore the beginning and the changes of Taipei International Marathon route planning; third, to provide insights into the concerns and cogitation about the marathon route planning. The study is based on documentary analysis and the data are collected from papers, journals, newspapers, magazines, program books, and the Internet The findings and conclusions are as follows. First, the event of marathon was first instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens. An official distance of 42.195 kilometers was set directly from the length used at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. For Events were governed by the IAAF, the marathon courses included one-way, turn by turn, and round-trip routes. Second, the Taipei International Marathon dates back to the 1980s, when the Mini Marathon was held by the Chinese Taipei Track and Field Association(CTTFA) from 1981 to 1985, which laid the solid foundation for the Taipei International Marathon in 1986. Before the route of the Taipei International Marathon was actually planned in downtown Taipei in 2001, the race was once held on the national highways, elevated roads or riverside bikeways, even suspended due to the construction of the MRT from 1990 to 1991, and the 921 earthquake in 1999. Third, the success of the city marathon is based on the cogitation over the traffic control, which needs trimmed route planning and communication, the safety of the runners, the air quality of the day, and the applause and cheers from the audience, which encourages the competitors to complete the course. The Taipei Marathon toured through some of the representative constructions such as the Presidential Palace, East Gate, Dong-he Monastery Bell Tower, National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, and the Grand Hotel.
