Lower-Limb Plyometric Training Combined With Hamstring Training Improves Sprint Exercise Performance

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of combining lower-limb plyometric and hamstring training on sprint and hurdle athletes' performance in competitions. Methods: Fourteen trained collegiate sprinters and hurdlers (5 males; 9 females) were recruited and randomly divided into lower-limb plyometric training combined with hamstring training group (CT) or maintain their regular weight training (CON) for 6 weeks. Subjects all participated in one domestic competition before and after the experiment. The sprinting performance were based on subjects' fastest time in each competition. Result: The result showed that 6 weeks combined training did not effect the subjects' time to finish the game among CT (before: 24.8 ± 7.5 sec; after: 24.3 ± 7.3 sec) and CON (before: 37.3 ± 8.2 sec; after: 37.3 ± 8.3 sec). There were no significant differences between the results in two competitions for the groups (CT: 0.48 ± 0.60 sec; CON: 0.05 ± 0.20 sec; p > .05). Conclusion: This study indicates 6 week of lower-limb plyometric 100 times per week combining with hamstring training can not effectively improve trained sprint and hurdle athletes' performance in games.
