Antipsychotic drugs, which control dopamine concentration in brains, are mainly prescribed by psychiatrists to treat mental illnesses. However, extrapyramidal symptoms are antipsychotic drugs' main side effect, which causes movement abnormality and mental distress. According to Chinese medicine theory, mental illnesses are caused by excessiveness or insufficiency of yin and yang, and the book written by Zhang Zhongjing-Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease-has description on mental and movement abnormalities. In this article, I will discuss the relationship between the prescriptions in Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease and extrapyramidal symptoms.
