Older adults with frailty are prone to high risks of cognitive and physical impairments which may lead to disability and lower quality of life. Evidence showed that both cognitive training and aerobic exercise have been effective for improving cognitive functioning and physical performance among community-dwelling seniors. However, board games as one kind of cognitive training has not been currently available as interventions for the older frail group. This study aimed to explore the effects of board games combined with aerobic exercise on improving cognitive function and physical performance in this particular group. Eleven older adults (n=11) with clinically defined frailty were recruited from the community in northern Taiwan. They received training through board games combined with aerobic exercise for 24 training sessions, each lasting 60-min twice every week. Assessed at baseline and after training, the outcome measures included cognitive functions such as neuropsychological examination, and physical functions including examinations about frailty status, the activity of daily living, and Time Up and Go (TUG) test. Our result showed that a 24-session intervention of board games combined with aerobic exercise training have ultimately improved frail elderly's attention/working memory (p=0.013), 5-meters walking performance (p=0.026), and frailty status (p=0.046). This study shed lights to future disability prevention for community-residing older adults with frailty.
