English for Art and Design: A Review of English Courses in Art and Design Departments

Under the trend towards globalization, English language proficiency has become an index of international competitiveness. In accordance with the Executive Yuan's ”Challenge 2008: National Development Plan,” the Ministry of Education has drew up a number of projects, such as the cultivation of talent for the e-generation and in the cultural creativity industry, to internationalize Taiwan's higher education and enhance its competitiveness. The common ground of these projects is to emphasize the ability to master foreign languages, especially English. Each university or college has accordingly made efforts to carry out projects related to English proficiency. It is of great concern to the researchers if the college students in art and design departments, who are creative-minded, have good English skills to acquire their broad global experience. This study examines the English courses in art and design departments in Taiwan's higher education institutions. To realize the trend of art and design English, the current English courses are analyzed on such elements as number of semesters and courses, course categories, category combination, school years, and course titles. The results show that technological universities or colleges offer more semesters and courses. There is still room for some comprehensive and technological universities or colleges to add more semesters for English learning. Both of them emphasize general English courses which are also offered according to the sequence of language learning. However, both of them offer only less than 10% of English for specific purposes, noting that there is a growing trend for art and design departments to offer this kind of courses.
