Writing the Métis: Wisps and Discontinuities in Maria Campbell's "Halfbreed"

摘要


女作家康玻透過《混血》的瑣碎敘事,以變體英文書寫、混合文體、詼諧笑話建立當代媒地文學風貌,展現不同於其他族群的自我差異。在加拿大多元文化研究或原住民研究中,媒地文化向來難以擺脫歐裔殖民的思維,因此,身為混血族群一直不離「貧窮、骯髒、體弱多病、酗酒、醜陋、愚蠢」等刻板印象。媒地族人的日常生活語言或生命故事,也常在主流文化中被視為「不純」、「非原住民」,甚至暗藏「非法」之意。本文討論當代媒地自傳體如何以微小輕快的形式轉換原先外加於媒地文化的負面意涵?康玻如何借用書寫我族的細微與碎裂經驗,將媒地族人置入當下加拿大情境?《混血》裡媒地女性的瑣碎經驗與零散軼事,不再是「偏差怪異」,而是表現「混搭」新意,展演當代媒地族的開創力量。

Maria Campbell's ”Halfbreed” (1973) illustrates the here and now of Métis culture in Canada, while propelling the act of reterritorialization that arises from narrating the anecdotes within Métis communities. This paper foregrounds anecdotes and discontinuities operating in Métis writing to argue that the subversive humor in the wisps of narratives, as a circuit that strings together the anecdotes and oral tradition, reframes the drastic change of time and space in this autobiography. It draws upon relations among half-breed, hybrid, and becoming-minor to access the creation of contemporary Métis culture.
