Shiki's Realism: Fūryū (風流, Art and Beauty) Can Be Found Everywhere

摘要

The modernization of haiku poetry of Masaoka Shiki (正岡子規, 1887-1902) was based on the idea of shasei (写生) -the theory of Realism-. Shiki took to relook at the past from his own perspective of Realism and rediscovered haiku poet Yosa Buson (与謝蕪村, 1716-1784). Shiki went on to typify Buson's poetry as "positive beauty" and Bashō's as "negative beauty." According to Shiki, generally speaking, Oriental literature tends toward negative beauty, while Western literature tends toward positive beauty. If we were to consider this in terms of epochs in history, then we can say there was more negative beauty in antiquity and more positive beauty in posterity, regardless of East or West. (Haijin Buson) Shiki appeared to be asserting that attention should be made to positive beauty in order to revolutionise conventional haiku-only by doing so could haiku transcend the differences of East and West to reach a higher form of "art" by basing on modern aesthetic senses.
