Acute Effect of Static Stretching with Vibration Stimulation on Shoulder Joint Flexibility

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate acute effect of static stretching with vibration stimulation on shoulder joint flexibility of healthy subjects. Methods: Sixteen young subjects were randomly separated into two groups, as vibration and control group. All subjects went through 30-seconds internal and external rotation stretching exercises 4 times with interval rest of 20 seconds around dominate shoulder joint. Before and after stretching exercise, each subject performed four flexibility tests, two single-axis tests (horizontally shoulder internal and external rotation) and two functional tests (Up-ward functional test, U & Down-ward functional test, D). The comparison of pre-post test by paired t-test and the comparison of increasing rate between two groups by independent paired t-test. Results: In pre-post test, the results of single-axis flexibility indicated no significant improvement in both groups. However, in the functional flexibility, there were immediately significant effects on functional U test by 8.98% in vibration group and 7.89% in control group and only vibration group indicated significant improvement on functional D test by 12.90%. Moreover, there is no significance between two improvements. Conclusions: Six-min static stretching with vibration can immediately improve the U & D functional flexibility; however, static stretching just improved U functional flexibility in the same duration of intervention. Thus, vibration factor would be effectively an activator to improve functional flexibility of shoulder.
