Application of RFID to Enhance the Safety of Operating Room Patients

Accidents or mistakes during surgery are not rare, and can result in patient harm. From process of safely identifying patients undergoing operation, this study found that 1) Six patients were incorrectly identified due to heavy staff workloads. 2) In total, 505 seconds were needed for patient identification by staff. 3) Alarms or messages were unavailable in the computer system when patients were incorrectly identified. This study introduces Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) into the patient identification process, combines RFID with the current computer system, and establishes a new procedure for patient identification. After implementation, the number of misidentification of patients was reduced to zero measured by a simplified process- investigating flowchart. This system reduced time spent in patient identification by 71%, from 505 seconds to 145 seconds. Our experimental results suggest that the application of RFID increases the rate of correct patient identification and safe medical procedures, and decreases personal mistakes, thereby reaching the goal of assuring security for patients undergoing surgery.
