大學外語系學生參與TOEIC國際志工之語言、文化習得經驗

The Language and Culture Learning Experiences of English-Majoring Students Participating in the Case of TOEIC International Volunteers

摘要


志願服務與服務學習近年來被認為是現代公民參與社會的最佳方式。每年寒暑假,皆有不少學生自費或部分自費,參與由學校、非營利組織機構等單位舉辦的國際志工服務營,透過參與實現自我對國際社會的關懷,並激發對國際社會之使命感、責任感,履行公民世界的義務。ETS臺灣區代表,自2012年起亦躬逢其盛,積極開創臺灣動員國際志工新模式,與大型國際賽事及議事合作,招募「TOEIC國際志工」,透過TOEIC英語檢定認證,依照不同服務內容選出最能符合幫助的活動志工,並參與培訓、服勤管理諮詢。由於這個活動主要特色為「在臺灣本地擔任國際志工」,有別於高經濟成本的傳統國際志工,因此吸引許多學生報名參加,截至2016年9月,共錄取2,897人次。但是,也因為與海外服務為主的國際志工不同,故在其參與過程,是否亦能達到學生預期的體驗及學習成效,便有待探討。本文即以深度訪談的方式,探討外語系學生參與TOEIC國際志工的語言、文化學習經驗,並提出相關建議,供主辦委辦單位、參與學生、以及相關教師參考。

In recent years, volunteering is considered to be the best way for students to involve themselves in modern civil society. In each summer and winter vacation, many students participate in some international volunteering camps, which are held by schools or non-profit organizations, usually at their own expenses or part of. Through participating in such activities, students can exercise their concerns for the international society. Moreover, those can excite their sense of mission and responsibility for the international society, and fulfill the obligation of being a citizen of the globe. The Taiwan branch ETS has actively promoted the international volunteer model in Taiwan, and cooperated with major international organizations with international events since 2012. They recruited the "TOEIC international volunteers," through the TOEIC English test certification, in accordance with different services to select best qualified volunteers who can help needed work, participated in training, and then serve management consulting. Because the chief characteristic of this activity is "as an international volunteer in Taiwan," it attracts a lot of students to sign up, unlike traditional international volunteer activities. Until September 2016, it totally recruited 2,897 people. This article is to discuss the language and culture learning experience after students participated in the TOEIC international volunteer activity. The researcher shares these conclusions and suggestions with the related staff in organizers, schools and students.
