Increasingly the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of individuals, neighbourhoods, communities, and nations as a whole is a subject of great focus. Leisure is a multi-dimensional construct requiring cultural relevance and understanding. As an emerging force in both Western and Eastern societies, leisure plays an increasingly important role in contributing to and promoting healthy lifestyles. In fact, leisure offers many benefits including ones linked to health, social development, community identity and cohesion, environmental stewardship, and economic development. Contemporary concepts of health suggest that it be viewed not only in the context of the absence of disease and illness, but more importantly, as it relates to leisure the physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of individuals. Central to the development of leisure environments which promote healthy, active lifestyles is the crafting of the ”built environment”. This concept refers to areas which are inhabited and used by individuals which coexist with social factors which facilitate interactions with others. The built environment includes manmade, social, and cultural factors that operate in a holistic fashion to promote healthy behaviours. There are five strategies focused on promoting leisure themes that can be used to promote the built environment including: 1) zoning; 2) planning; 3) policies and procedures; 4) management leadership; 5) community leadership.
