The Legacy of Sports Mega-Events the Case of the Athens Games 2004-A Proposal for an Efficient and Sustainable Use for Sports Venues after Mega Events

The Olympic Games can be categorised as an event of enormous magnitude along with other special sporting and non-sporting events like World-Championships or a World Expo. Hosting the Olympic Games allows the host, to bathe in the focused spotlight of world attention for about 14 days or maybe for even longer, if the construction phase is also included and has the relevant effects on the city's image like it was the case for the London Games for example or the Soccer World Cup in South Africa or Brazil. However, whether the elevated attention- more or less on a global scale- will be matched by an equivalent economic stimulant for the host or sustainable positive effects on urban development cannot be taken for granted.
