The purpose of this study was to investigate the swimming ability and the related factors of the 2006 freshmen of national Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, By questionnaire survey, The available data of 1391 students (male 891, female 500) were collected. The findings were: 1. Freshmen who has swimming course at their earlier school stage were 531(38.17%), no swimming course were 860(61.83%) 2. Freshmen who ever learned swimming skill with professional coaches were 455(32.71%), never were 936(67.29%) 3. The swimming ability of freshmen is classified as follows: (1) Non-swimmers 208(14.95%) (2) Under-level swimmers 726(52.19%) (3) Pass test swimmers 457(32.86%) 4. The major reasons for students to be non-swimmers were: (1) No interest (2)fear of suffocation (3)no time (4)no swimming pool for learning 5. The related factors of under-level students by list orders were: (1) No time to learn continually (2) The time for learning is not enough (3) No interested (4) Sports skill is not good 6. When did the students who reach the goal of ”pass-test swimmer”? (1) Elementary school (and before) 190(41.58%) (2) Junior high school 142(31.07%) (3) Senior high school 125(27.35%) 7. For the students who can swim and past the test, the reason why they can did it (or the most influential person) by list orders were: (1) Coach (2) PE teacher (3) self-practice (4) family members (5) friend (6) classmate (7) others 8. Statistic results showed that the swimming ability of students are significantly related to the following factors ”gender”, ”with or without swimming course at earlier school stage”, ”ever or never learned swimming skill with pro-coach” among the above 3 factors and swimming ability has significant differences (p<0.05).
