Based on Amabile's model of motivational synergy, the present study is aimed to explore the effects of synergistic and non-synergistic extrinsic motivations on teachers’ creativity and creative accomplishments. Besides, this study explores the moderating effect of non-synergistic extrinsic motivation on the relationship between synergistic extrinsic motivation and creativity. Participants were junior high school teachers who supervised students participating in science fairs in Taiwan. A total of 401 samples from 72 schools were selected. Using the two-step approach of structural equation modeling to conduct data analysis, the results indicate that: (1) non-synergistic extrinsic motivation has a negative impact on creativity through synergistic extrinsic motivation; (2) synergistic extrinsic motivation has a positive impact on creative accomplishments through creativity; (3) non-synergistic extrinsic motivation does not have a moderating effect on the relationship between synergistic extrinsic motivation and creativity. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.
