The Practice of Interactive Peer Learning Style and Its Effect on English Speaking Enhancement

The purpose of this study was to probe how the style of peer learning impacts the proficiency of English speaking ability. Partly due to the fact that the majority of people in Taiwan are still unable to speak fluently even after years of learning English, and partly attributed to the perception of the good reputation of Toastmasters from all fields nationwide in Taiwan. A study of Changhua Toastmasters Club with 22 participants was undertaken. A questionnaire of foreign language speaking anxiety among the members of Changhua Toastmasters Club and a survey of semi-structured interviews were utilized to collect the data. The SPSS version 12.0 for Windows was administered to compute the collected data. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation, one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data at p<.05 level to understand how peer learning makes an impact on English speaking ability. on the members of Changhua Toastmasters Club. Unlike traditional classes, the learning approach at the Changhua Toastmasters club transformed a style of student-centered learning, in which participants evaluated their own peers' strengths and weaknesses regarding public speaking skill during weekly in-class Toastmasters gatherings. Each participant at the Toastmasters club serves not only as role performer but also as mentor. The results of this study showed that the reason for the participation of the members of Changhua Toastmasters Club was not mainly to meet members' needs, but rather the desire to make acquaintances with those with shared interests and enhance their English speaking ability. However, there was a consistent agreement held by all participants that among the four-role-playing assignments; speaker, Toastmaster, evaluator, and impromptu speaker, the last role had the most significant and results favorably on the promotion of English colloquial ability from peer learning. In short, the members of Changhua Toastmasters Club hold a positive attitude toward Toastmaster, and showed no doubts about the effectiveness in enhancing their English speaking ability through the cooperative atmosphere of peer learning.
