The Comparison of Elbow Range of Motion between Dominated and Non-dominated Arm in High School Baseball Players

摘要

The background and purpose: The clinician involved who treat the baseball player in clinical often observed the players have contracture in elbow joint. Less objective studies were found the range of motion (ROM) different between dominated and non-dominated elbow in baseball players. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to compare the elbow ROM at dominated and non-dominated arm in the baseball players. Method: Twenty-two baseball players were recruited from senior high school in Taichung as the study subjects. In the study, researchers had measured the elbow range of motion which including flexion, extension, pronation, supination, valgus, flexion-extension total range, and pronation-supination total range by using a goniometer. The flexion-extension total range was calculated by flexion degree minus extension degree and pronation-supination total range was calculated by pronation plus supination. The paired-t test was used to compare the dominated and non-dominated elbow ROM in baseball players. Result and Discussion: All of the players had showed significantly difference at dominated and non- dominated comparison in elbow flexion (132.6°±3.0°;137.4°±4.5°), supination (69.2°± 16.8°;110.2°± 22.0°), valgus (13.0°± 4.1°; 11°± 4.7°), flexion-extension total range (135.7°± 8.5°; 136.4°± 7.1°) (p<.05). There was no significantly different in elbow extension, pronation, pronation-supination total range (p>.05). Conclusion: It would be make elbow injury that the range of motion decreased when they must to do the motion completely. In addition, the range of motion of elbow had significant difference at dominate and non- dominate as long as do the treating which is related with the baseball, and then it was not be ignored. We suggested that the coach needed to improve players' flexibility of elbow.
