The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among exercise identity (Anderson, Cychosz, & Franke, 1995; 1998; 2001), exercise commitment (Wilson, Rodgers, Carpenter, Hall, Hardy, & Fraser, 2004) and exercise dependence. Participants were 303 adults (males=177; females=126) with mean age of 29.75 (SD ± 3.84) years completed Athletic and Exercise Identity Scale, Exercise Commitment Scale and Exercise Dependence Inventory. The collected data were analyzed by Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple hierarchical regression analysis. The finding were as the following: 1. Exercise identity, exercise commitment and exercise dependence were all positively correlated. Also, it was found ”want to” of the commitment had the highest correlation with exercise dependence. 2. It found that ”have to” and ”want to” of the ECS positively predicted ”decreased vigor” of the EDI. Also, ”athletic identity” of AEIS and ”have to” of the ECS positively predicted ”physical discomforts” of the EDI. Finally, ”positive affect” and ”athletic identity” of the AEIS and ”have to” of ECS also positively predicted ”mood disturbance” of EDI. This study suggested that when exercisers perceive exercise as an obligation would facilitate exercisers experiencing negative psychological and physical symptoms of exercise dependence. Therefore, exercise instructors should carefully understand the motives of exercisers so to prevent them from negative exercise dependence.
