Peripheral blood mononuclear cell from anti-HBsAg antibody seropositive donors were in vitro challenged with HBsAg, transformed with the Epstein-Barr virus and cloned for production of anti-HBsAg antibody. One of the subclones, DF4.22, showed stable growth, constantly produced IgA anti-HBsAg antibody and expressed surface IgA but did not express IgG or IgM. The DF4.22 cells were MHC Class 11+ (91.3%), CD34+ (30%) and CD21+ (19.5%), suggesting that the lympho-blastoid cells are in pre-B cell stage and the CD21 (Epstein-Barr Virus receptor) on DF4.22 was down-regulated.
