Gearbox Dynamic Optimization Using Genetic Algorithms

This paper presents the application of a genetic algorithm in order to optimize the dynamic response of a mechanical transmission. The optimization takes into account the principal parameters which influence overlapping excitation frequencies (resonances) and therefore, minimize vibrations caused by the interaction among the gearbox elements. The optimization maximizes the sum of difference between consecutive frequencies. Results show that the continuous genetic algorithm proposed allow the inclusion of complex models, such as the nonlinear gearbox model, and the solution search within a space design with abrupt changes and discontinuous functions. This method can be applied for the preliminary design process and it sets the basic gearbox design solution.
