Practice of construction an eco-friendly wetland-Engineering transformation of the atrium garden in Dali High School, Taipei as an example

Dali High School is located on the left bank of Tamsui River in the Taipei basin, near the Huajiang Wild Duck Nature Park, therefore was selected by the Taipei City Animal Protection Office as the site for Taipei Wild Duck Nature Education and Interpretation Center in 2014. Surrounding the classroom originally used for natural science and technology teaching now served as an indoor educational commentary room and an outdoor atrium garden surrounding the classroom has been transformed into a wetland. This wetland has been designed based on the image of a miniaturized the Tamsui River and Huajiang wetland. These areas are in the vicinity of the School. Replacement of the old concrete pond in the atrium with an eco-friendly mini wetland benefits amphibians such as frogs and aquatic insects. In addition, planting native aquatic plants in the transitional zone of this mini wetland provides a basis for biodiversity development. Overall, the main goal of this project is to establish a wetland education center in which students and public can learn river ecology and conservation. More importantly, the public are likely to be inspired to play a magnificent role in implementing ecological conservation in the Tamsui River.
