The personal collection of books (for private libraries) has a long history, and reached its height in the Ming and Ching dynasties. In addition to acquiring books, collectors also scrutinized and proofread their collections. They analyzed similarities and differences among their books, as well as comparing them with similar books and making evaluations. They recorded their reviews in prefaces, postscripts or notes, and made lithographic copies to record their research findings. They made great contributions in the fields of bibliography and bibliology. Huang Pi-lie is among the most famous of book collectors since the decline of the Hanchia school. He bought hundreds of Song block-printed books, and spent days and nights scrutinizing and proofreading them, as well as writing prefaces and postscripts. His work has been treasured by posterity. I studied his prefaces and postscripts in the Ci collection thoroughly, and realized that there were 34 of them. I wrote this thesis to discuss his attitudes to collecting books and contributions to proofreading. It is hoped this paper will highlight the characteristics of his writing, such as the range of emotions contained in the books, the preservation of the Ci collections and his appraisals of various editions.
