Applications of Color Image and Aesthetics Measurement to Color Combinations in Applying Cosmetics

Based on theories related to Moon & Spencer color harmony and color aesthetics, this study explored college students' image perceptions of the cosmetics put on by fresh graduates for job interviews; it aimed to generalize certain rules based on the experiment results. This study is divided into three phases. For phase one, an open-ended survey and multidimensional scaling was conducted to select the representative color image adjectives for cosmetics. For phase two, samples of the cosmetics color combinations were produced. The RGB values of blushers and lipsticks were measured through X-Rite ColorMunki Photo and converted to the values of the Munsell Color System. The values were calculated and the aesthetics measured to obtain combinations with high aesthetic values for cosmetics; the results were applied to produce color samples for the experiment, as well as to the paper samples of the cosmetics color images. For phase three, a survey was conducted on the fitness of the color image-related adjectives for cosmetics. Based on the survey results, test subjects' image perceptions of the cosmetics colors were numeralized, and colors reflecting 〞elegant〞, 〞mature〞, 〞natural〞, 〞calm〞 and 〞friendly,〞 all of which have obtained high aesthetic scores in color image combinations, were proposed. The study results would show if, in the calculation of the color combinations with the aesthetic measurement, test subjects evaluated color combinations based on whether the images achieved their intended perceptions. Hence, the aesthetic measurements and the image perceptions of the color combinations had to comply with those preferred by most general consumers. In regard to the color combinations of the cosmetics put on by the fresh graduates for job interviews, warm colors such as red and reddish purple should be selected for blushers, and red should be chosen for lipsticks. Combinations of uniform or similar hues are closer to the ideal.
